- The San Francisco 49ers have selected Gonzaga alum Cam Johnson ’08.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Cam Johnson (Gonzaga ’08) 237th overall in the 7th round of the 2012 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City yesterday.
At Gonzaga, Johnson earned all-WCAC honors in football and basketball, and started at wide receiver and defensive back for the Purple Eagles. A four-year starter at UVA, Johnson became a defensive end specialist. He started all twelve games for the Cavaliers in the 2010 season, in which he led UVA with 6.5 sacks.
Although a leg injury kept Johnson off the field for much of the 2011 season, many draft analysts projected Johnson to be selected in the 3rd or 4th round. After the 49ers finally tapped him in the 7th round, Johnson tweeted that he is “Excited, ready and blessed” and that “Everything happens for a reason.”
