The Gonzaga varsity football team won the 92nd Game of the Modern Era against St. John’s in front of about 8,000 fans on November 5th. After allowing the Cadets to take a 14-10 lead early in the second quarter, the Eagles took to the air scoring on two long pass plays to lead 24-14 at half. A touchdown on the opening drive of the second half for Gonzaga was followed by one for St. John’s, but the Eagles would get another on interception return to make the score 38-21 going into the 4th. St. John’s would score on the first play and midway through the final quarter, but Gonzaga responded with one final drive and score to make the final, 45-35. Gonzaga is the #2 seed and St. John’s is the #3 seed in the WCAC playoffs.
The last time the Eagles faced the Cadets in the WCAC Semifinals on Buchanan Field was a 3-0 victory in 2002. 2016 is the first time since 2012 that the WCAC Semifinal games are being played at the higher seed’s venue.
